Community Art Piece to Flutter Throughout Delano

And Welcome Spring in April

Delano-Area Businesses and Organizations to Host “Lily McFlurry” the Butterfly, Presented by St. Peter’s School

Delano, Minn. – April 3, 2008 – A “community art” piece, presented by St. Peter’s School, is fluttering to Delano-area businesses and public sites throughout April to welcome spring.

The piece, titled “Lily McFlurry,” is a large, colorful butterfly with a 4-foot wingspan. More than 70 children and adults attending St. Peter's School annual Cabin Fever Family Event in January worked together to create Lily, designed specifically to welcome spring and celebrate artists.

Lily’s first stop was the State Bank of Delano, March 31 – April 4, and the St. Peter’s School booth at the Delano Expo April 5.

Lily McFlurry is shown with State Bank of Delano President Steve Gilmer
and St. Peter’s students Cecelia and Marcus Kuka.

Future stops include the Delano Senior Center, April 7 – 11, and the Delano Public Library April 14 – 18.

Lily McFlurry’s creators wrote their names on bright colors of fuchsia and yellow tissue paper. They glued them to the wings of the large black cardboard butterfly designed and built by St. Peter’s School third-grade teacher, Suzanne Salonek-Yager. People suggested names and dropped them in a box. From those names, St. Peter's School students voted to name the butterfly Lily McFlurry.

At Lily McFlurry’s base lies the inspirational words of Hans Christian Anderson, “Just living is not enough," said the butterfly, "one must have sunshine, freedom and a little flower."

“We’re proud to present this unique art piece to the Delano community,” said Nicole Belpedio, St. Peter’s School principal. “Most of all, we’re grateful to the young artists who created her and shared their gift of art with our neighbors.”

Other businesses and public venues are welcome to host Lily McFlurry by calling St. Peter’s School, 763-972-2528. For more information about St. Peter’s School, visit www.stpetersschool-delano.com.
