Where were you born and raised? I was born and raised on a dairy farm outside of Watertown, Minnesota, surrounded by many aunts, uncles, cousins, and my grandparents. I was the only girl in a family with four boys.
What schools did you attend? I attended the public schools in Watertown. I attended the College of St. Benedict for two years and then I transferred to St. Cloud State University. I graduated with a B.S. in Elementary Education and an Art minor in 1986. In 1999 I began a Masters Degree in teaching and learning through St. Mary’s University. I became a mom in 2000. I decided to postpone my graduate degree so I could savor every moment of motherhood.
Where were you previously employed? I had a variety of jobs in college. I was employed as a sixth grade teacher at St. Philip’s School in Litchfield, Minnesota. I spent one year as a substitute teacher. I worked in display at Sears in Ridgedale. I also worked as an administrative assistant for a computer consulting company.
What brought you to St. Peter’s School? Although I enjoyed my jobs outside of the teaching profession, I really longed to be back in the classroom. I missed the sense of satisfaction that comes with having my own class of eager learners. I knew I wanted to live close to Minneapolis, and I knew I wanted to teach in a Catholic school. I was very grateful to find that St. Peter’s School had openings.
What do you enjoy most about your career? Working with children is what I enjoy most about my career. Each day is an adventure. Each class has its own chemistry. Teaching and learning go hand in hand. I’m still learning and that is invigorating!
What are your favorite hobbies/pastimes? I love spending time with my son, Noah, and our extended families. We spend lots of time visiting my parents on their farm. Noah is impressed with the animals and the tractors. I’m a voracious reader. I also enjoy photography, drawing and playing the piano.
What is your “secret” for working with children on a daily basis? Sister Christian Morris at the College of St. Benedict told me, “Do what makes you happy. That is what you’ll love the most. That is all God really wants us to do.” I don’t have any “secret”. I simply enjoy children.
